Remarkable Dance 2021

Despite locked away status around the world in 2021, many of us kept our spirits up with the power of dance! We had no shortage of party anthems, from classic re-works to deep melodic bangers and the occasional lasers out rave anthems this year.

Let’s face it, dance music today doesn’t thrive on originality, but more than ever, 2021 liberally made its mark with big-name remakes of classic tracks of the 70s and 80s... not even sea shanties were safe! Majestic on Boney M’s ‘Rasputin’, PNAU reworking Elton John’s medley ‘Cold Heat’, Joylon Petch taking on Fleetwood Mac ‘Dreams’ and the list goes on. It seemed as though people were seeking out familiarity, and they got it in spades.

With original productions, the deeper melodic house and techno wave continue to influence more mainstream tracks highlighting a darker feel across many of the top songs this year. Big-name collaborations between Bebe Rexha & Topic, Joel Corry & Charli XCX and the long-awaited return of Swedish House Mafia (complete with a vocal from The Weeknd!) all had a more sombre tone.

Like all music scenes, the dance/EDM industry has taken a massive hit in 2020-2021, with clubs and festivals, the lifeblood of the scene, shut down across the globe. And while DJs everywhere have embraced live streaming, there’s no substitute for being in a packed, sweaty room or field with massive sound. The Blessed Madonna & Fred Again’s track ‘Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing)’, a late-night lockdown anthem, summed it up best “This year we’ve had to lose our space, we’ve lost the hugs with friends and people that we love, all these things that we took for granted … if I can live through this, what comes next, will be, marvellous.” Indeed we will, and it will be!
