Remarkable Pop 2021

Pop kept us dancing and crying into 2021: but this time not limited to our kitchens.

Let’s start with one of the mega stars that made a return in 2021. Ed Sheeran released the fourth album in his symbol series, = (pronounced “equals”), preceded by massive hits ‘Bad Habits’ and ‘Shivers’. In between the two, he shared ‘Visiting Hours’; a touching tribute to Sheeran’s close friend and mentor, the Australian music industry icon Michael Gudinski who sadly passed away in March.

Speaking of Australia, The Kid LAROI, just 18, has not slowed down one bit since his debut in 2018 and has topped the global charts for most of the year with singles ‘Without You’ feat. Miley Cyrus and ‘Stay; feat. Justin Bieber. Another young superstar released her highly anticipated sophomore album in July: Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever. Her multi-talented brother and producer, Finneas, followed suit with a debut record soon after.

Adele made a long-awaited return when she released her first single in almost five years, the emotional piano ballad ‘Easy on Me’, and just a month later she dropped her fourth studio album 30. A (sort of surprising) stellar collision occurred when Coldplay teamed up with K-pop sensation BTS (who have also had a massive global hit of their own, ‘Butter’) on ‘My Universe’ ahead of their ninth studio album, Music of the Spheres.

It has also been a year of stars on the rise: Holly Humberstone, Griff, Conan Gray, Blithe, Clinton Kane, Mimi Webb, and Hanne Mjøen - just to mention a few - are names we’ve been spinning all year and cannot wait to hear more from. Last, but definitely not least, Swedish pop giants ABBA returned with new music for the first time since 1971. Not just a couple of songs but an entire album, Voyage, saw the light of day and you wouldn’t believe that it’s been 40 years since their last new release. So what more is there to say than ‘Thank You For The Music’? Now go explore!
